CHRISTIANS TAKE UP MEDIA CHALLENGE.

Christians are active in every section of the news and electronic media. They are involved at every level, from journalism to television and radio station management. There is also a strong Christian presence in commercial and community radio and in commercial and corporate television and video production. Many of these Christians have a strong commitment to their faith and a vision for God principled broadcasting and production in Australia.

Television & Video Production.
Among those bringing this vision into reality is Peter Moss of Australian Christian Television Services (ACTS) and his wife Robyn. Both share the vision of a broader Christian presence and expression in the media. Peter started his career in the film department of Channel 7 and rose to become Senior Station Director. He then joined TCN Channel 9 as the Manager, Commercial Production Department. He left Channel 9 to set up his own non-profit company, Australian Christian Television Services. In addition to live satellite broadcasting and Studio TV programs, ACTS produces television commercials and corporate videos. The resources generated by this commercial involvement are directed towards Christian productions. Sharing this vision is Gareth Grant of Multi Media. Multi Media is a production house with full commercial video editing facilities.

Satellite Communications.
Other Christians are also active in Satellite communications and broadcasting. Former TCN Channel 9 Commercial Production Manager, Andrew Ricker is now the Executive Producer of Satellite Express International (SEI). Andrew's strength in television and video production provided the essential background for this exciting venture. SEI produces medical educational programmes which are transmitted nationally via satellite, or, are delivered on video tape to medical and health care professionals. Andrew's colleague is satellite network manager and marketer Paul Bennett, who has a background in media, finance and administration. Andrew and Paul intend to extend the facilities of SEI to produce and transmit balanced Christian educational programmes. These programmes as well as special events could then be distributed to the widest possible audience.

Community Radio.
Christians are also having a significant impact in community broadcasting. In recent years a growing number of Christian spawned community radio stations have sprung up in New Zealand and across Australia. This expansion is largely due to the commitment of people such as Warren Rout of Radio Rhema, who has done much to encourage Christian involvement in radio. Christian community broadcasting not only exists in major cities, but is also present in country regions. People in Orange no longer have to wait for Sundays to hear Christian music and programs. Radio Rhema on 106.7FM, has been broadcasting Christ's message on the airwaves. The Station Chairman is NACL Chairman, Graham McLennan, who sees a real need for Christian broadcasting. Says Graham, "Every major city has a Christian radio station, and we felt there was a real need for this in Orange. Considering the fact that 85.4 per cent of the community say they have a Christian affiliation of some sort, there must be quite a number of people for whom Christian faith is important and they want an input into their lives through radio." Radio Rehma. concentrates on contemporary artists and programs are primarily targeted at people aged between 20 and 40. Most people have a preconceived notion that Christian radio stations play only organ music. However, the featuring of popular Christian artists such as Cliff Richard and Amy Grant has changed all this.

Community Television.
Paul and Jenny Dickinson had been predicting community television for some time. They sold their Melbourne home to set up a television studio in Chilton, Victoria, where they also operate a community radio station. The Community Choice Television (CCT) station has outlayed $ 100,000 for the transmitter and antenna, and has its own vintage television van, which was used at the Melbourne Olympics. Says Paul, 'I've been anticipating community TV for a long time. I did not know when it would eventuate - but it is here now. Paul and Jenny's full time television station has been broadly welcomed by the region The station will not only provide a foundation for Christian television productions, but will also provide a good training ground for young people to gain valuable work experience. In addition to the television station, Paul and Jenny also hold two radio licences for the region, and a further two licences are anticipated
