A network of about 80 local churches and Christian Organisation leaders from Canberra and surrounding districts, lodged a submission to the recent ACT Government review of signs on the approach routes to the city.
"Canberra and Australia needs letters to the Prime Minister, the Federal Minister for Territories and our ACT Chief Minister Mrs Carnell, asking for a descriptive naming of Canberra that really reflects our heritage in the purposes of God," Pastor Medway said. “It is hoped that a proposal for another ’naming' of Canberra will be put to both governments shortly, based on one of the earliest names of Australia: 'The South Land of the Holy Spirit' (from an early name by Fernandez de Quiros in 1606) and related to Australia's Christian heritage.)
It is anticipated that a Canberra Christian grouping will prepare the proposal, with the assistance of NACL, and seek the support of Christians nationally when it is submitted to government.
The name Canberra comes from the local Aboriginal name for the location, which means 'meeting place'. In modem Hebrew, Canberra means 'Place of the Capital'.
As the Researcher for the Canberra Christian Network, I believe it is appalling that the capital of the great south land of the Holy Spirit is claimed to have been dedicated to honour a cult leader from the same stream of spiritual and philosophical ,at the now defunct 'Orange People' commune in Oregon, USA.
This lawlessness was rooted in the Advaita (i.e. non-dualist) Vedanta philosophy espoused by the gurus of the 'Orange People' and TM, the Bhagwan and Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
The Transcendental Meditation cult of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi achieved unwanted notoriety when a US Court ruled that TM's basic meditation introduction technique was not scientific, as claimed by the cult, but, in fact, nothing but a common or garden-variety Hindu religious ceremony to Hindu gods. That court action was initiated by a US Christian group.

CANBERRA ''A SRI CHINMOY CAPITAL
Now Australians are faced with Canberra's government honouring Sri Chinmoy, a guru from the same lawless TM spiritual stream, whose disciples have infiltrated the UN headquarters in New York. (The Australian, 24 May 1993, p.7)
Chinmoy expresses this same extraordinary lawless philosophy when he writes: "When we enter into the spiritual life, moral truth is transcended by spiritual truth .the [the disciple] cannot be bound by moral truth". Chinmoy also says: "If we tell someone a moral truth, then we may create
Aurobindo. Wrote Sri lives in Auroville in order to be free moral and social conventions."
Compare this approach with the Bible which commands people respect and obey those authority, and to intercede in prayer them. The Canberra Christian Network urges Christians to write to: the Pri Minister, Mr Howard; the federal Minister for Sport the Territories a Local Government, Mr Warwick Smith; and the ACT Chief Minister Mrs Kate Carnell, asking them to end any involvement by their government with the Chimnoy "cult" and to the claim that Canberra is a 'Sri Chimnoy Peace Capital'.
